Hello, people. Does anyone still read this?
Anyway, just felt like writing today. I saw a couple posts by others about gyms. Thought I'd write about my recent experiences.
Bally hasn't been cutting for me lately. The Hollywood gym I've been going to is really nice, but there are more downsides than that one good one. When I joined 7 years ago, I signed a contract for $40 a month, for three years. I was promised that at the end of three years, my payments would drop to $15 a month. As promised, they did. What they didn't tell me was that my monthly payment would rise by a small percent each year after that. I've been at $19 and change for the past year. Another downside is that none of my friends are Bally members. I always work out by myself.
I started looking into 24-Hour Fitness, and I'm happy I did. The first factor which got me looking was that it seemed like all my closest friends were members. Then, I was offered the killer deal:
Up front, I pay (in 3 installments) $700 dollars for the first three years. That's $19 and change a month, which is less than I'd be paying at Bally after they raise my monthly payment again this summer. The clincher is that after three years, I drop to $50 A YEAR, and that doesn't change unless I drop my membership.
I immediately signed up. I also got an awesome beginner package, with a bottle of multi-vitamins (a month's worth), a couple of protein shakes, and bunch of pretty tasty cookies, protein bars, and such. Now, I get to work out with a couple of my friends sometimes, as well as trying to get some others close to me to sign up at some point (ahem!).
There have only been a couple downers since I joined, and they aren't that bad. One, I miss a couple of small things about the Bally I went to all the time. At that Bally, there are TV's on every cardio machine with cable channels (MTV, Comedy Central, the Documentary Channel, etc.), and they have a very good smoothie bar at the facility, something only a few 24-Hour Fitness gyms have. Also, I had a bad experience with a personal trainer, who was supposed to give me five complimentary sessions. I won't go into it, but it isn't that big a deal anyway. I was only taking the sessions because they were free.
So all in all, I'm a happy camper at 24-Hour Fitness. Who wants to go?
